Painful to get through. Her yearning, one that is undefined and yet that takes over her every sense, has made her physically sick — a sickness in some senses that afflicts Matteo too. Showing of 8 reviews. And I refuse to believe that neither Laila, or Matteo, found even one, at a time when Journe were simple people. This is one of the relationships I was unable to fathom. So well written at parts, but I got halfway through and realized that no one in it was getting any more likable.
Oh and poor Sophie. They have travelled to India to seeking spiritual enlightenment.
Caroline was sent to a convent school in Milan and Matteo to a school in Turin which had been recommended by his uncle. It’s a bit of a drag. Jourhey is more of a believer of love which is why she is willing to follow Matteo to every corner of the earth even though their beliefs itahca needs are so different at this point.
If you are expecting something like that then this novel will come as an disppointment. I kept imagining a young Steve Jobs in an ashram. I am no sinner.

It is full of rambling prose, and uninteresting characters, in a very boring, uneventful plot. I’m not sure whether it’s due to my high expectations or if it’s just not my kind of book.
Her prose is as beautiful as ever in this book. But he remained a rebellious student, learning nothing, eating nothing. Matteo and Sophie travel to India where he searches for spiritual enlightenment while she sulks in boredom and disdain.

Anita Desai has yet again woven a beautiful story with the threads of human nature and their psyche bringing together ordinary characters with somewhat similar stories.
AND a proper kthaca, pleaseLl. Well written but I don’t like any of the characters very much. The deeai flows nicely and gives you a sense of the journey made by three central characters in their quest to essentially find themselves.
