I did eventually pick it up on one of my many book hauls. This is discussed on several occasions. See all 9 questions about El Clan del Oso Cavernario…. The minimal dialogue feels natural and comfortable. Ayla is such a well-developed protagonist. There is a lot more to it in there, and I found the book fascinating.

This was a fantastic book. Loved learning about how herbs and foods and medicines were used and prepared, and was surprised and excited by the expertise shown. Why did you threaten to strike a spirit? As Ayla grows and learns the customs, language and ways of the clan, her life is hard. I was completely drawn into the story right from the very beginning until the cavernatio three, heartbreaking words that end the book.
I love these books and have read some in the Earth’s Children series many times because I love the detailed descriptions of their way of life. Not even 10 stars is enough for this book. Hearing that song would remind me that I needed to read the book.
The long descriptions never come across as dry or boring, but instead leave me with more questions. She is almost a different species than them. I also loved that Ayla was an innovative and strong woman, and I enjoyed learning about botany and medicinal uses for plants as she became a medicine woman. Ayla grows up among the clan and struggles to find her place. I am afraid she’ll ask for book suggestions and I will suggest one with swear words in it or something.
Open Preview See a Problem? I appreciate stories that are historical fiction or fantasy where a complex society and intricate details about the lives of the inhabitants are described. Although this series is marketed as young adult I would recommend it for older teens and adults.

I think I loved this book because I imagined it was the same way in my life. As ugly and strange to the clan as the girl seems, she brings them luck and they very soon find a new cave, even better than their last.
Iza, the medicine woman of the Clan of the Cave Bear, stumbles upon her and takes her under her wing, but Broud, the proud son of the clan leader, Brun, takes an immediate disliking to the young non-Clan girl. Note, March 25, Books by Jean M. Most people felt that the last book was a cop out, I happened to find it a gentle conclusion after so many long years of waiting.
Again, the depictions are not graphic. You will not be disappointed. So yeah, great reread! It was vibrant and meticulously detailed.
