That would not do what is required.
Using gimp itself would be a better option. It looks as if ImageMagick does support XCF, so that is probably an easier route if the support seem so be good enough. Kristian Rietveld about 14 hours ago.

I don’t know why exactly the rename and convert methods fail, but I suspect that as an Adobe product, Lightroom is very particular about PSD files.
