The adventures are great, the underlying plot is compelling, and the ongoing complexities of Gaea, the Wheel, fascinating. Terrific 2nd of a series.

It’s very different in feel from the first volume; almost a little too peaceful and threatening, until you realize you’re just being softened up before everything goes to hell.
Gaea was not a distant concept to her inhabitants. My favorite part was when Robin and Chris attacked the God-like Gaea first curing Chris after he decided he didn’t want to be cured and second for regrowing Robin’s little finger that she cut off to prove her strength.
A sequel to Titanin which Varley invented Gaea–an enormous sentient artifact orbiting Saturn while serving as whimsical demigoddess to the several races of creatures whom she has amused herself by creating within her remarkable topoggraphy.
Not with Barley level skill, but still decent enough that I enjoyed the ride well enough. Add Titanides to the list of fictional creatures I would not mind being.

She was a God of blood and sinew whose bones were the land, a God with massive hearts and cavernous arteries who nourished her people with her own milk. Lists with This Book. There are serious conflicts and resolutions, but not with idealistic happiness. Actually that might be weirdly appropriate, considering the musical communication between the centaurs.
And I am even less impressed with this second book in a putative trilogy than I was with the first.

My personal meh about the underlying story may be just me. These characters, who I fail to really care about in any way, get in the way of the real conflict wziard action of the novel the battle of wills and, ultimately, of lives between Cirocco and Gaby on the one hand and Gaea on the other.
They encounter johm characters from the last book. While it is possible to say that it is not quite as good as Titanit is nonetheless a page-turner and it does amaze and delight. The exploration has been relegated to the background. It definitely passes the Bechdel test—there are more than two women humanswho talk to each other about many things besides men. This is very much a quest tale—both Chris and Robin have genetic anomalies that are disrupting their lives in major ways and they have come to Gaea to see if they can be healed.

To reach vsrley, all one had to do was climb kilometers. This is the second book in the Gaea trilogy, and a science fiction book. This and the first book were littered with many such bits which only served to drag down a good bit of storytelling. Gaea tells them they have to go on an adventure and prove themselves.
