I found it all very confusing and it was a slog to finish. A whirlwind of passion and madness rose in her head; the blood which boiled in her veins made everything about her seem like a conflagration. All that being said, the book is still a fun read and it is entertaining, even if it does drag on near the end. Cjouans Chouans was a huge disappointment for me.

Romeo and Juliet Los Tarantos Barbette comes back to find his head swinging from the door and tells her son to serve the Blues to avenge his father’s death. His willful nature caused trouble throughout his life, and frustrated his ambitions to succeed in the world of business. Biographer Graham Robb notes that the original subtitle of the book was La Bretagne en — the year of Balzac’s birth.
He failed in all of these efforts. For this reason and owing to the florid descriptions of romantic elementsthe novel has been compared to William Shakespeare ‘s play Romeo and Juliet.

Like the Mahicans of Cooper’s novel, the Chouan insurgents are skilled at using their surroundings, coming bqlzac of the woods in more ways than one.
The book is fast-paced and an extraordinary read and highly memorable. The story sometimes verges on farce as the plot twists and turns. At the start of the story the Chouans in support of le Royalists attack the Republicans led by Commander Hulot and they attract many of the local peasants to their cause.

Les Chouans French pronunciation: This was Balzac’s first serious story but the melodramatic influence of his previous pot-boilers shows in his style. An enthusiastic reader and independent thinker as a child, Balzac had trouble adapting himself to the teaching style of his grammar school.
Inevitably they meet up again and resolve the issue but the reader isn’t sure who is duping whom. These rustic Chouans rise up in support of the King-in-Exile and his supporters, who include the Britishtheir leader being one Marche-a-Terre.
One can hardly imagine him writing more accurate people.
Yet as with every Balzac offering I have voyaged through Dhouans kept the pages close to my own existence, the book never further than a metre from my passage, and when I recalled the events that had most recently unfolded, my first instinct was to conjure the characters in the flesh, for such was and remains the sublime genius of dear Honore that his wordsmithery conjures imagery with such zeal that its often remarkably tricky to understand at first glance back towards the experience that these were lines and words on a page, not a film I had seen.

As such, one might enjoy reading an earlier version for comparison, but as it is, this is a superb book which deserves far more credit than it deserves, in my opinion. View all 8 comments.
Both stories explore love among feuding parties; both involve vengeful, scheming individuals; and both end in tragedy for the newly-wed couple.

I thought that Hulot was a much more interesting character. While it is disdained by critics in favor of Balzac’s later work, the novel marks a turning baalzac in his life and artistry.
